Defining the intersection between listening and living

“The sun may rise in the east At least it settles in a final location”

Psychic spies from China
Try to steal your mind elation

Little girls from Sweden
Dream of silver screen quotations

And if you want these kind of dreams
It’s Californication

Californication as defined by the urban dictionary is –

Western society’s pop culture and media encroachment and spread all over the world. In particular, the negative aspects of media and culture originating from within the United States’ 31st State: California.
The song Californication by the Red Hot Chili Peppers is one of my favorites. I have a great deal of artistic respect for this group and the music they produce. This record in particularly evokes feelings of society, self-awareness, apathy and reminds me of a poem by Langston Hughes, A Dream Deferred, in which you consider what happens when you postpone a dream or put it to the side.
“Californication” as stated by the urban dictionary America’s pop culture has spread at an alarming rate. This spread as I see it is a stylization of american views and concepts. We impress our superiority on the word. We depict our blatant use of derogatory slang terms, racism, sexism and other bigotry. Then we expect to be considered as an example for all to follow. For a nation that was founded on freedoms, we offer a great deal of oppression through the imposition of religion and moral obligation. The themes of Californication are not difficult it is a simple understanding of self-awareness in a world where we copy, manufacture and brand style based on how it suits us. We tell our children to hold celebrities up the chastise them for being human. I recall this weekend while listening to this song, discussing current events. Trayvon Martin case, fruitvale station, conversations with other friends, our past, and the increase in LGBT movement. We discussed Egypt and how we thought we were doing. The more I think about these the more I consider we still have a long way to go and that it must start with each and every person.
Examining the first verse of the song, I feel as if the Red hot chili Peppers are just setting up a scene. How are we experiencing our lives. How we are influenced by our cultural perceptions.
It’s the edge of the world
And all of western civilization

The sun may rise in the east
At least it settles in a final location

It’s understood that Hollywood
Sells Californication

Pay your surgeon very well
To break the spell of aging

Celebrity skin is this your chin
Or is it war you’re waging

First born unicorn
Hard core, soft porn
Dream of Californication
Dream of Cailfornication

Marry me girl be the fairy to my world
Be my very own constellation
A teenage bride with a baby inside
Getting high on information

And buy me a star on the boulevard
It’s Californication

Space may be the final frontier
But it’s made in a Hollywood basement

And Cobain can you hear the spheres
Singing songs off station to station

And Alderaan’s not far away
It’s Californication

Born and raised by those who praise
Control of population

Well, everybody’s been there
And I don’t mean on vacation

Then progression of the song, speeds and slows with a melody that is so captivating I tend to lose myself in thought. Thinking of the real state of society. The part of the verse,  Space may be the final frontier
But it’s made in a Hollywood basement, is one of my favorites in the song because it speaks of defining what is real. In this day and age with the progression of technology becoming rapidly close to science fiction I think about how this is so true.

The song then progresses to the hook,

First born unicorn
Hard core, soft porn

Dream of Californication
Dream of Cailfornication

Dream of Cailfornication
Dream of Cailfornication

I really see the concept of dreams, especially the american dream. While today’s reality of overwhelming financial debt from student loans have placed this generation’s dreams in an all-consuming descent into darkness. I wonder where the thoughts and hopes of Family, stability and happiness are.

The song’s conclusion is a birth of sorts to me. There is no life without death, and from death comes a new life. A hope that even within the ever-growing westernization of the world and the in abilities that we have a change within a single individual can start a revolution.

Destruction leads to a very rough road
But it also breeds creation
And earthquakes are to a girl’s guitar
They are just another good vibration

And tidal waves couldn’t save the world
From Californication

Pay your surgeon very well
To break the spell of aging
Sicker than the rest, there is no test
But this is what you’re craving

First born unicorn
Hard core, soft porn
Dream of Californication
Dream of Cailfornication

Dream of Cailfornication
Dream of Cailfornication

The dreams deferred of a Californication are a reality in America, it is because of this song that I challenge each person to define and capture your dreams. Be original, Be honest, and above all else be yourself. Define yourself by the character of your actions, not by what is seen on TV or done y celebrities.
