Defining the intersection between listening and living

Recapturing Nostalgia

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “A Bird, a Plane, You!.”

So I got to thinking about some of the daily blog posts and prompts based on Monday’s blogging 101 assignment. While I really had not thought about using a post before I understood how it could be helpful. There was something in the assignment that made me really think about using post. It being that we should stay true to our blog and the direction which made me think that I should review several prompts and find the one that speaks to me the most. What I decided was the one about.

” If I could have any superpower what would it be and why?”

I chose this because it made me think about a road trip that I just took. I was asked by my best friend’s wife to come for a surprise birthday party and anniversary present. So I and our other best friend decided to drive up on a week night on an excursion to surprise him. The two hour and thirty minute trip to get there seemed to go by quick. We spent the time reminiscing on old times, how we have grown where we envisioned our lives and what they were currently. The conversation went from music, to culture, to kids and family spiraling into the abyss of nostalgia where we looked at where some of our other friends where and recalled our high school antics.

We continued the conversation with the larger group upon the arrival of the surprised birthday boy and other friends. We talked about the wild days and late nights. How we gracefully entered our thirties and matured a little but kept small parts of our childhood. The night went on getting latter and later witnessing a mini concert of a college acapella group singing, Water runs Dry by Boys II Men. Then we went on to start playing basketball at around ten thirty that night, needless to say we didn’t finish until midnight with the same two and a half hour drive home.

On the way home we discuss the conversations of the evening and how even though time passes we still seem to have the same conversations. One of the conversations we often had and still have to stay youthful is what superpower would you want we kind-of got started on this conversation again on the way back because we had just been talking about the upcoming TV season and what we were looking forward to watching. He noted that no one was talking about he knew Heroes reborn series. I told him that I was looking forward to it an hoped that it would capture the essence of the original which got us talking about what superpower we would want. He commented on his usual flight or teleportation, because he just would want to get places fasted.  I told him I would like Intuitive aptitude or adaptation, because I would like to either know how things work or evolve. We laughed and thought about how things change but our relationship stays the same.

This was funny to us. The surprise party went well allowing us to reminisce and gain a sense of nostalgia as we recalled events and times past. I sit and recall the conversation and our journey again listening to Kanye West, Power.

I’m living in that 21st Century, doing something mean to it
Do it better than anybody you ever seen do it

Screams from the haters, got a nice ring to it
I guess every superhero need his theme music

No one man should have all that power
The clock’s ticking, I just count the hours
Stop tripping, I’m tripping off the power
(21st-Century schizoid man)
The system broken, the school is closed, the prison’s open
We ain’t got nothing to lose, motherfucker we rolling
Huh? Motherfucker we rolling

With some light-skinned girls and some Kelly Rowlands
In this white man world, we the ones chosen
So goodnight, cruel world, I’ll see you in the morning
Huh? I’ll see you in the morning
This is way too much, I need a moment.

So with this let this one man have the power to at least recapture the nostalgia that surprise parties and road trips with friends bring.

Fabulous response. I really enjoyed reading your post. This sentence in particular was great: ‘We laughed and thought about how things change but our relationship stays the same.’
